Since the mid 1970s, the Brahma Kumaris have been offering meditation courses and programs on personal development in Australasia. In April 2007, a commitment was made to reach out to neighbouring countries in the South Pacific, offering more people in the region the opportunity to learn meditation and explore personal transformation. This outreach initiative is called “Pasifika Peace”.
Pasifika Peace aims to deliver courses and seminars to Pacific Peoples in a culturally empowering manner and through sustainable programs. It is a joint New Zealand/Australia initiative of the Brahma Kumaris.
During September 2008, Pasifika Peace visited Samoa and Vanuatu to meet with community, government and business leaders, the media, students and local people. The welcoming and positive response has resulted in plans for sustainable follow-ups in Samoa and Vanuatu - to teach meditation and personal development courses in response to local needs. Subsequently two return visits have been made to Samoa in 2009 and 2010 including a brief visit to Pago Pago, while two return visits have been made to Vanuatu in 2010 and 2011.
In 2010 an inaugural visit was made to Tahiti, French Polynesia. The overwhelmingly positive response resulted in a return visit in 2011 and also the neighbouring Noumea, New Caledonia.
During 2011, three further inaugural visits were made to Pacific countries, namely, Fiji, Tonga and the Solomon Islands and in 2012 so far visits to Papua New Guinea and Kirribati. Pasifika Peace was once again very well received in all of these countries. In response to invitations to return, planning is underway for future visits.
